Alastair Parvin: Architecture for everyone, by anyone

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09QyFJXrPB4

When we use the term - architect, or designer, what we usually mean is a professional. And, we've always assumed that is those professionals, who are going to be the ones who help us solve problems like climate change, assertion quality and organization.

And then, in 2008 just before I graduate as an architecture student, this happened.
and, this is designs economic paradox, which is as a society, we've never needed design thinking more, but architects are unemployed.

so we need to go back to the economics.

As a fresh architecture graduate, I expect to earn about 24,000 pounds. Now, if you put that in terms of entire world's population, now it already puts me in top of 1.95%. And, I can't afford to hire myself. So, who exactly is it that architectures are working for? The truth is that what most people called architecture today is actually the business of working for about 1% of the world's population. And it always has been. (0:59)

(1:00) Um, on those times in history when architecture has been commissioned by the 1% on behalf of the other 99% whether that be through slump in the 19th century, communism, the welfare state, or most recently the infected real estate market, all, all they failed.
And, we're back to square one.

The challenge facing my generation of architect is how to make our client for the first time not just the 1%, but the 100%.

And I wanna offer 3 ideas for how it might do it.

The first idea is that actually we need to get rid of this idea that architect is only about making buildings. Actually, building is a bloody expensive solution to any hidden problem. And, design fundamentally is aobut solving problems. So, here's a true story.

Uh, a school go to an architect. And, they say, "Look, our corridors are absolute nightmare, uh, between lessons, they get entirely congestive that we can't control them. Now what we are gonna do? We're gonna have to remodel our building. It's gonna cost millions of pounds."

a5897d11.jpg

And, uh, our team went away, and, they thought about it, and they said "don't do that. actually, get rid of the school bell. And, replacing instead of one single school bell, have a series of smaller school bells, they go off in different places at different times, distribute your traffic through your corridors solves the same problems. Instead of spending a few million pounds, we spend a few hundred pounds. "

The 2nd idea is that we need to get rid of this 20th century idea architecture's about big big buildings and big finance. Actually, a thousand people with one pound is just as good as one person with a thousand pounds. And, we actually need to restructure the way that we sell design services, the way that we lend, and also the way that fundamentally we plan cities to take this recognition on board.

And, finally let's remember that actually, design economically is like sex. Mostly, it's by amateurs. We tend to forget that, we tend to forget that incidentally child care is the same. Most of the work is done outside of the market economy and that's a good thing. So the challenge that we face is how we are gonna build the tools in the infrastructure for architecture's social economy.

Historically, what we've done so far is open-source software. And, more and more what's happening is that that means also open-source hardware. Uh, open sourcing the ability to manufacture fabricate things so we have 3-d printers that can be made on the 3-d printer, or devices such as this, which is CNC machine that can be cut using another CNC machine.

We're moving into the future where the factory is everywhere. And, that means design team is everyone. And we were actually fascinated by what this might mean for architecture.

WikiHouseS

So, last year we began to work on a project called "WikiHouse". WikiHouse is an open-source construction set. And, its aim is to make it possible for uh anybody to go online, download our models which are freely and openly shared. and pretty much, uh, click of a switch, generate a bunch of cutting files which can be fed into CNC machine to print out the parts for a house, which they can then build without formal construction skills or power tools, and they can do it in about a day.

And, we build a few prototypes of these, and it's really exciting everytime incredibly sociable. Um, what's really exciting is that now teams of people around the world have begun to pick up on it, and they've begun to take it, and tinker it, and improves the system.

And, really WikiHouse is just a very early experiment. But, actually I think that in there is perhaps the ghost of industrial revolution. If the 20th century, if designs great project in the 20th century was actually democratization of consumption that was Henry Ford, Coca-Cola, LeviTown, Akia, I believe designs great projects in the 21st century is the democratization of production. And nowhere is that more important than the way we make architectures and the cities.

Japan has offered to enrich uranium for Iran to allow it access to nuclear power while allaying international fears it might be seeking an atomic weapon, the Nikkei business daily reported Wednesday.

Tehran had not yet given a concrete response, but the issue was expected to be discussed Wednesday in Tokyo by Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani and Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada, the daily said in an online report.

World powers suspect Iran is enriching uranium to make nuclear weapons under cover of its civilian energy program, a charge Tehran denies.

Iran is at loggerheads with world powers for not accepting a deal drafted by the International Atomic Energy Agency that would supply it with nuclear fuel for a research reactor if it transfers the bulk of its low-enriched uranium.

Iran has so far failed to take up the IAEA offer under which Russia would enrich its uranium and France would process it, and Tehran this month said it had itself begun enriching uranium to a higher level.

In Business In Japan,
Japan makes uranium offer to Iran

Japan has made an offer to Iran which could see it help the country enrich uranium, it has been reported.

According to local news source the Nikkei Business Daily, Tokyo offered Iran help with enriching uranium back in December last year, when Iran's nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili was visiting the nation.

The report said that the uranium could be used to make medical isotopes at a facility in Tehran.

However, in a speech earlier this week, Japanese prime minister Yukio Hatoyama urged Iran to cooperate with UN Security Council resolutions and measures put in place by the Atomic Energy Agency in order to reassure the world over its intentions.

Nations including the US and the UK have previously expressed fears that Iran may be seeking to build highly destructive atomic weapons, which could be used against the west.

Iran has in the past refused offers from other countries to help it enrich uranium, preferring to stick with its own measures.
